My Learning Journey – Rushil Bir Singh Arora

Rushil Bir Singh Arora

Name: Rushil Bir Singh Arora
Name of institution: Singapore Institute of Management (University of London)
Course of study: B.Sc Accounting and Finance (Hons)

Why did you choose to pursue this course?
Throughout my High School days in Jakarta, I was very engrossed in Accountancy as to how the numbers are culminated and utilised in any business. With my number crunching ability, I could say it was my favourite subject back in those days. The reason was simple: I wanted to learn how to implement it in the real world (as in my father's business) and improve efficiency. I decided then that I would want to pursue a degree in Accounting and dive deeper into the countless portions of accounting concepts and formulas.

In contrast, the Finance part was relatively new for me. I research a bit about it on the Internet and I thought this degree was the perfect opportunity for me to blend both worlds as they are not far off in between. To top it off, Accounting and Finance complement other subject areas that fall under the large umbrella of Business.

How did you hear about Singapore Institute of Management and its course?
I was made aware by a study abroad counsellor in Jakarta about the various programmes offered by SIM and what caught my interest was Accounting and Finance under University of London. I then came to Singapore and opted for a campus tour and I instantly fell in love with the place and its facilities and decided that this is the place where I am going to study.

What is the best thing about studying at Singapore Institute of Management?
It would definitely be the lecturers and their flexibility in teaching. Offering a seamless approach to learning and to be given opportunity to innovate and help others is what made it more interesting. The amenities the university has to offer is something to look out for. There are many clubs that one can join. I myself was one of the founders of the Indian Society Club at SIM. This gave me the opportunity to interact with a lot of people from various background.

What has been the most interesting aspect of your learning journey?
The most ecstatic part about my journey was undoubtedly the bonding with other students who later became my closest friends. Having to live together and share each other's experiences (as they were all from different background) was very heartwarming. I had tears when it was time to bid everyone goodbye.

What advice do you have for students who wish to pursue a similar course?
My advice would be that these years come only once in your lifetime, so make the most of it. Try to find new things to learn every day and network with a lot of people as they will come handy in your life. As Singapore is a regional hub I found limitless opportunities to meet and share with other fellow students and working professionals.
