[Imperial College London] Global Master of Public Health

Last Updated on 29 April 2023

The Global Master of Public Health from Imperial College London is a research-driven, flexible degree for the next generation of public health leaders. As a Global MPH student, you’ll study biostatistics, epidemiology, health systems and more. You’ll also hone your research skills by exploring issues that affect your own community.

The programme’s curriculum is rooted in evidence-based research skills. You’ll learn from faculty who are shaping global policy, such as researchers who led the fight against the Ebola virus.

Whether you’ve already had extensive experience in the public health field or you’re longing to build a high-impact, and useful career, a Global MPH will help shape you into a leader in this field. Students at the School of Public Health come from paths in medicine, health policy, academic research, and more. However, there is one common thread: The calling to help make the world healthier and safer for all.

Course Duration

24 months
Average of 24 hours per week, completely online

Course Content

The Global Master of Public Health is a fully online part-time programme, delivered and structured over two-years, with three terms per academic year.

Core specialisations will focus on building core skills and knowledge in epidemiology, the spread and prevention of disease, statistical analysis and modelling, public health practice and global health challenges.

You will also be able to build a degree that best suits your interests, through the selection of four elective specialisations (out of a choice of eight), allowing you to focus your efforts on those areas of study of most importance to you and your future career.

You will be required to complete a substantive research output, across a number of core research specialisations that make up the research portfolio, which accounts for a third of the course. During the first half of the portfolio, you will learn key knowledge and skills required to design, plan, conduct, analyse and disseminate research in public health through three taught specialisations (research portfolio 1 – 3). Within these specialisations, you will start to develop your own research in fully supported learning environment.

In the second half, you will finish your research portfolio, which will lead to a draft paper (academic or policy), blog and dissemination plan. In this way, you will be supported throughout your project and will enjoy a consistent level of supervision and structured learning.

Course Outcome

When you graduate, you’ll be able to:

  • Apply health research methods, including epidemiology and biostatistics.
  • Become a global public health professional and build a strong career leading to roles at institutions such as the United Nations and the World Health Organization.
  • Develop towards leading roles in fields like public health analysis, communicable disease control, environmental epidemiology, and global health policy.
