My Entrepreneurial Journey – Maizura Rahman

Maizura RahmanName: Maizura Rahman
Name of business venture: Tiny Tots by Pastel Patches
Role: Owner

What made you choose to become an entrepreneur?
I have always dreamed about owning my own start-up ever since I was 16, but I had to forgo my tertiary studies and had to earn a living by juggling two to three jobs to support my family. Owning a business seemed too far-fetched then. When I got married and had my son, I decided to quit my jobs to bring up my son. It was a financial struggle until I decided to put my foot down and pursue what I have always wanted to do, and that is to own a business. Having a baby was my biggest blessing and I have always been passionate about children. Thus, it became my calling to venture into baby and toddler fashion.

What are the skills required to become an entrepreneur in your field?
Definitely good social etiquette and service. One has to understand that in order to strive and grow in a business, one must know how to sustain good ties with their consumers, both new and repeat customers.

The biggest challenge for me was definitely trying to juggle both my duties as a mum and as a business owner, putting my son’s priorities first but also wanting to deliver the best service for my customers.

Tell us about your business. What inspired you to come up with this idea?
Tiny Tots by Pastel Patches is a humble online business that offers not just cool and stylish apparels for babies and toddlers. Apart from our current Punk Rock Collection clothing line, we also do custom prints for special occasions, for example, coordinated uniforms for kids for a birthday party, coordinated family T-Shirts, matching sibling rompers, etc. We aim to provide very affordable clothes for the whole family.

What inspires me to start this journey as an entrepreneur are the current mumpreneurs I have met online, who are strong and independent and who, like me, are trying to make ends meet for their family by spearheading their own start-up.

What are some of the biggest challenges you face in running this business? How do you deal with them?
The biggest challenge for me was definitely trying to juggle both my duties as a mum and as a business owner, putting my son’s priorities first but also wanting to deliver the best service for my customers.

What other plans do you have in your pipeline?
I'm currently in talks with a few other mumpreneurs to form a collaboration between our businesses to build a bigger network of clients together. I am also in the midst starting my own clothing line called Xunknown, which will focus on the theme of protest art.

What advice do you have for people who wish to become entrepreneurs?
Just do it. Even if it is just a small step like planning your business cards before coming up with an actual business plan, just do it. These small steps will be the drive that pushes you to start up your business.
