Name: Teo Zi Lin
Name of scholarship: APB Foundation Scholarship for Persons with Disabilities
What made you apply for this scholarship?
I applied for this scholarship because I wanted to help ease the financial burden on my dad, who is the sole breadwinner of the family. My elder sister has just finished her university education at Global SIM, and now it is my turn to enter university. It will be a toll on my dad if he has to pay for my university education as well.
How did you hear about this scholarship?
I heard about this scholarship during a Scholarship Application Clinic held in Ngee Ann Polytechnic as part of The Christieara Programme.
How did this scholarship help you in your studies?
It helped me to stay motivated because as a scholar, I have to meet the expectations by the scholarship sponsors and the scholarship management. Also, I have to be a good role model for my peers. In addition, the scholarship helped me to focus on my schoolwork without having to worry about school fees or living expenses.
Tell us about the scholarship interview and selection process. What was it that clinched the scholarship for you?
The scholarship interview was enjoyable, because it was like a casual chat between the interviewers and me. The selection process consisted of two interviews held by SPD and ABP. Besides my academic achievements, I think being myself was what clinched the scholarship for me.
What advice do you have for students who wish to apply for scholarship in general?
During the interviews, be yourself and be honest. Giving politically-correct or cookie-cutter answers will not help.
So what are you busy with these days?
Approaching my last semester in NUS, besides the usual drill of scurrying from classes to classes and burning the midnight oil for assignments, I am also preparing for my career plans. This includes brushing up my portfolio and CV and being on the lookout for career opportunities. To improve my CV, I took up internships during the summer holidays every academic year. I am also providing freelance design services under my sole proprietorship, Equipoise Design, to improve my portfolio.

Proud father of two lovely kids, who at times pushed me to seriously consider editing out the word “lovely” from this sentence. (I am not alone in this.)
