Epsom College In Malaysia

Epsom College in Malaysia (ECiM) is a boarding and day school on a 50-acre site at Bandar Enstek, south of Kuala Lumpur. It follows the British National Curriculum with all teaching in English. The College has strong links with many influential Malaysian figures, not least Tan Sri Dr Tony Fernandes, himself a former pupil of Epsom College.

The impressive Senior School campus, developed on a green-field site, comprises of ultra-modern hi-tech, environmentally-friendly buildings, with specialised facilities for music, drama and sport, the latter including floodlit astroturf pitches, sports halls, a swimming pool and hard courts. There is also dedicated science and art departments.

Senior School teaching staff, Housemasters and Housemistresses, together with tutors and their families, reside on site. There is also a Prefect system, modelled on the successful structure at Epsom College, within both the school and the individual Houses.

Boarding defines the ECiM experience
Living at school with their friends is an exciting, enjoyable and enriching way of growing up. Your children will learn a lot about themselves and other people. They will learn how to live and work with others and how to be part of a community.

Schoolwork is done without mums and dads having to coerce/cajole. The school has a Prep (Homework) system where there is routine and all pupils are expected to work at that time.

Boarding instils into the boys and girls self-sufficiency and confidence, which develops independence that prepares them for the world beyond school.

In addition to full boarding, weekly boarding, which was pioneered by Epsom College in the UK, is an option. This is proving to be popular with parents who want a British boarding lifestyle for their children without having to travel long distances.

Programmes Offered

Prep School Curriculum

Early Years (3-5 years old)
Focused on ensuring the development of the ‘whole child’, with play forming a central part of the child’s experience. Indoor and outdoor learning are mixed throughout the days.

The 7 areas of focus for the programme are: literacy, mathematics, expressive arts & design, personal, social and emotional development, communication and language, understanding of the world and physical development.

KS1 (Key Stage 1) 5-7yrs and KS2 (Key Stage 2) 8-11yrs
A broad curriculum based on the British National Curriculum, with plenty of emphasis on the basics of literacy and numeracy. Children also study humanities and languages (French, Spanish, Mandarin and Bahasa Melayu).

The curriculum meets the requirements of top senior schools. Progress and attainment is matched against UK expectations, with parents receiving three reports annually along with three parent/teacher meetings.

Senior School (Year 7-13) Curriculum
Students study a broad and balanced curriculum based on the British National Curriculum and reflecting our ASEAN and international context. Student progress and attainment is reported every term and there are regular parent-teacher consultation meetings.

The philosophy behind the British National Curriculum is that students focus on developing core subjects: Maths, English (reading, writing, speaking and listening) and Science (taught at Epsom as a combined subject in Year 7 & 8 and in Year 9 as separate sciences). In addition students have the opportunity to study humanities subjects such as History and Geography and practical subjects such as Art and Drama. Students also study Life Skills during Tutor Time each week. Physical Education takes place in co-curricular time and students may choose from a wide range of sports available. Year 7 to 9 students study 2 to 4 Modern Foreign Languages including French, Spanish, Mandarin & Bahasa Melayu.

External examinations are taken in Year 11 (IGCSE) and Y13 (A Levels). Some subjects are also examined in Y12. The academic year runs from September to August. The key timings for student entry into the College are September for Y10 (at the start of the two-year IGCSE course) and September for Year 12 (at the start of the two-year A Levels course). Some students may be ready to take IGCSEs in their mother tongue in Year 8, 9 or 10.

The College offers an 18-Month Programme (with a reduced number of subjects available) for Y12 students transitioning to A Levels in January.

For Year 7 -9 students with English as a second language, the College offers a specially designed one-year Academic English Programme with an emphasis on developing a student’s English language skills whilst introducing them to other subjects and subject specific vocabulary.

Sixth Form (A Levels)
The three examination boards used at Epsom are:

  • AQA (Assessment and Qualifications Alliance)
  • CIE (University of Cambridge International Examinations)
  • Edexcel (owned by Pearson)

Examination boards offer a choice of 55 different subjects and schools can offer them in almost any combination. This flexibility means schools can build an individualised curriculum, and learners can choose to specialise in a particular subject area or study a range of subjects. At Epsom, 21 A Level subjects are offered for September intake. For the 18-Month Programme (January intake), 7 subjects are offered.

Co-curricular Programme
The co-curricular programme at Epsom College in Malaysia is both formal and informal, with involvement with clubs, workshops, lectures, as well as interactions with academic departments.

The aim is to create a co-curricular programme that fosters tolerance and teamwork, and develops integrity, enthusiasm, resilience, fairness, humility, warmth and confidence; the key elements of leadership. We also expect to produce the skills of time management and promote the ability to use time as profitably as possible.
