This qualification is perfect for both marine professionals wanting to gain new hydrographic survey and oceanographic knowledge without having to study full time, and those with an academic interest in the subjects. The syllabus has been developed together with industry, so it will give you both academic theory and practical skills in hydrography and its allied disciplines.

Course Duration

The DipHE consists of eight modules, each of which takes 16 weeks to study. It is usually studied part-time, which means typically about 12-15 hours of study per week.

Modules run twice a year, so overall the DipHE degree takes about four years to complete.

Launched in 2012 from within Plymouth University’s School of Marine Science and Engineering, the Hydrographic Academy has quickly built a reputation for delivering fully supported university-level e-learning of an exceptional quality. This course has two components:

Introductory Module (8 weeks)
An Introduction to Hydrography and the Marine Environment (10 credits)

16 week modules
Nautical Science (30 credits)
Fundamentals of Hydrography (30 credits)
Maritime Studies for Hydrography (30 credits)
Practical Techniques in Hydrography 1 – Residential (20 credits)
Meteorology & Oceanography (30 credits)
Data Management & Charting (30 credits)
Hydrography in Practice (30 credits)
Practical Techniques in Hydrography 2 – Residential (20 credits)

Course Outcome

The course is perfect for marine professionals wanting to gain new survey and oceanographic skills and qualifications without having to study full time. The syllabus has been developed together with industry, so will give you academic theory and practical skills including subjects such as hydrographic survey practice and positioning, oceanography, and underwater acoustics.

When you have completed the course you will be fully equipped to work offshore in a hydrographic role. You will also have detailed survey production knowledge that will equip you to work in areas such as Oil & gas production and port operations and development.

Entry Requirements

Flexible but normally a high school certificate, however other prior learning and particularly significant professional experience can be considered by the Admissions Tutor.

Fees

Total amount: £570 (Introductory Module) + £14,320 (8 modules at £1,790 per module).

2 x two week residential supplements of £2,500* per residential not included in tuition fee. Flexible payment options and IMarEST Bursaries available upon application. Please contact us for details.
